Sorority Supports March of Dimes Efforts to Save Babies from Premature Birth

Atlanta, GA, the weekends of November 5th & 6th and 12th & 13th, worshipers will learn about an infant health crisis that nearly half a million families cope with each year, premature birth, thanks to Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Members of the Sorority will join congregational leaders in sending a message of hope for premature babies and their families.

Premature birth is the number one killer of newborns. In the last 20 years, the problem has become worse. Premature birth affects one in every eight babies in America. The rate is even higher among African-Americans for whom one baby in every six is affected. It’s a major cause of serious health problems and costs society billions of dollars every year.

That’s why the March of Dimes is leading a national effort to save babies from premature birth by funding research to find the causes and by supporting local programs that offer hope and help to families with a baby in intensive care. As part of that effort, November is designated as Prematurity Awareness Month to remind us that premature birth is a crisis and to bring people together to help give all babies their nine months.

As a leading March of Dimes ―community partner‖, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., was among the first organizations to raise awareness about the consequences of premature birth. They held their first Prematurity Awareness Sunday in 2003 and participation has been growing ever since. This year they’ll be sharing information about the problem, about how women can reduce their risks, and about how to support this effort, from wearing pink and blue to sending letters and raising funds. The March of Dimes is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. Founded in 1938, the March of Dimes funds programs of research, community services, education, and advocacy to save babies and in 2003 launched a campaign to address the increasing rate of premature birth. Kappa Iota Zeta Does it Again

Led by committee chair, Soror Lois McKellar and a dedicated team of walkers, Kappa Iota Zeta Chapter won the 2011 Top Club Award from the Atlanta branch of the March of Dimes for fundraising. KIZ raised almost $5600, beating out local chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, Omega Psi Phi, Beta Club, Truth Lodge and the Atlanta Urban League for the top spot. Kappa Iota Zeta was also presented the Chairman’s Club Platinum Award for outstanding performance and participation. Soror McKellar was also recognized as a Pacesetter for raising $1000. The awards were presented on September 22, 2011 at the March for Babies Award Reception held at Arnold Golden Gregory Law Offices in Atlanta.

Atlanta Metro Chapters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Team Up

with the March of Dimes to Educate Mothers-to-Be

ATLANTA, GA- In celebration of the 39th anniversary of Stork’s Nest, the metropolitan chapters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated are sponsoring the 12^th Anniversary Stork's Nest Blitz: Baby and Health Fair. This event will take place on Saturday, May 1, 2010 at the Mall West End, 12 pm to 5 pm. Maternal and child health care providers and agency representatives will be on site at the Blitz and it is free and open to the public.

The Blitz is an extension of the Stork’s Nest program that was created in 1971 in Atlanta by Zeta member Evelyn Brown to provide an incentive for pregnant women to make and keep prenatal care appointments, and to teach about healthy prenatal and infant care practices. The Stork’s Nest is now a national, collaborative effort between Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and the March of Dimes. The Stork's Nest Blitz is led by its founder and member of the Kappa Iota Zeta chapter Tonya Cook. Representatives from Zeta metro chapters will assemble layettes on-site that will be distributed to clinics participating in the Stork's Nest program, and they are asking the general public to donate additional new items, newborn items, as well as maternity clothes, toiletry items, and children’s books.

“Soon-to-be” mothers and “would-like-to-be” mothers are invited to participate in an educational workshop at 2 pm to learn more about prenatal care and breastfeeding. Special gifts, door prizes, diaper bags and boxes of diapers will be given to workshop attendees. Atlanta Zetas Celebrate the Finer Things in Life

Kicking off with their “sweet 16” Tea with Z on February 28, Finer Womanhood Month is underway for Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated’s Kappa Iota Zeta chapter in Atlanta. This year’s 16th annual tea brought out more than one hundred women dressed in their Sunday’s finest to the Sigma Zeta Foundation house in East Point. Tea participants enjoyed an afternoon of sophistication, a tribute to esteemed sorority member and Harlem Renaissance writer, Zora Neale Hurston, and “hat-titude” strut, teapot and table setting competitions. The successful event was led by chapter chairpersons and tea founders Erma Killings and Sandra Harris.

Other Finer Womanhood Month activities for the chapter include a Rededication Ceremony for any Zeta sorority member at St. Phillips AME Church in Atlanta (March 14 ), a Sister Luncheon (March 17) at the Sigma Zeta Foundation in East Point and the 19th Annual Hall of Fame Gala at the Westin Atlanta Airport hotel (March 27) honoring chapter members Margie Terry and Ernestine Sumlin.

Finer Womanhood Month was first introduced in 1923 as a week-long national celebration emphasizing the standards and customs of fine young ladies. Since then the event has expanded to Finer Womanhood Month beginning the last full week in February throughout the month of March. Atlanta Scholars Receive Zeta Book Scholarships for their Academic Achievement

ATLANTA – Members of the Kappa Iota Zeta chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated awarded Marynette Lovejoy Book Scholarships to eleven local students as they pursue post-secondary education. The students, six high school students, four undergraduate students and one graduate student, were recognized for their achievements at a luncheon held at the Sigma Zeta Foundation on Saturday, May 16, 2009.

The 2009 Marynette Lovejoy Scholarship committee was led by sorority member Patrice Joseph and supported by Jenelsia Lovejoy Belt, daughter of Marynette Lovejoy, Tonya Cook, Joyce Davidson, Kirston Ellis, Linda Isabel, Thelma Lester, Shannon McGuire-Lee, Vickey Silas, Terri Williams, Tecia McKay and chapter president, Vicki Pearson.

The Lovejoy Book Scholarships continue the legacy of literacy left by beloved Marynette B. Lovejoy, who was a 57-year active member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and a charter member of the Kappa Iota Zeta chapter in Atlanta. Ms. Lovejoy was a noted librarian and 38-year educator in the Georgia Public School system with a love for children and books. She received many accolades, including the Educator of the Year Award from Dekalb County.

ATLANTA – In celebration of the 38th anniversary of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated’s Stork’s Nest, the Metropolitan chapters of Zeta are sponsoring the 11th anniversary Stork’s Nest Blitz: Baby and Health Fair. Stork’s Nest, a collaborative effort between Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and the March of Dimes, is a prenatal education program created by a local Zeta member Evelyn Brown in 1971, and nationally adopted by the sorority in 1972. The Stork’s Nest program is designed to increase the number of women who receive early and regular prenatal care so that more babies will have a healthy start in life. Stork’s Nest provides incentives to help pregnant women make and keep prenatal care appointments. It also teaches expectant parents about healthy prenatal and infant care practices.

In 1998, the Stork’s Nest Blitz: Baby Item Collection Drive was created by Zeta member Tonya Cook, of Kappa Iota Zeta chapter, to encourage support from the general public for the Stork’s Nest. During the Blitz, an assortment of newborn baby items, such as diapers, bottles, receiving blankets, shirts will be assembled on site during the event into layettes later be distributed to clinics participating in the Stork’s Nest program. Zetas will collect additional newborn items, as well as maternity clothes, toiletry items, and children’s books. An educational workshop will occur at 2 pm regarding prenatal care and breastfeeding for expectant mothers and those thinking about motherhood. Mothers who attend the educational workshop will receive special gifts, door prizes and boxes of diapers. This year’s blitz is underwritten by a grant received by the Kappa Iota Zeta chapter from the March of Dimes, assistance from Walmart Stores, Incorporated and the Fayetteville Target store.

Atlanta, GA, — Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Kappa Iota Zeta (KIZ) Chapter has received a grant of over $14,000 from the March of Dimes Georgia Chapter to support their Stork’s Nest program, aimed at underserved maternal and child health needs here in Southwest Atlanta. This program will increase the number of healthy births in the community by increasing the number of lower-income pregnant women receiving adequate medical care and social services during their pregnancies. This grant is one of many that the March of Dimes awards in pursuit of its mission to prevent birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.

“We will use the March of Dimes grant as seed money to meet our objective of providing mothers and babies with prenatal education information and incentives such as baby layettes filled with bottles, bibs and newborn clothing,,” said Joanne Patterson, Project Director. “We are grateful to volunteers who support the March of Dimes by raising funds through events like March for Babies. We appreciate all of the volunteers who donate their time in other ways to promote research, community services, education, and advocacy. March of Dimes volunteers make this grant possible.”
